The Laser is a 14 foot sail boat with a single sail that is usually sailed singlehanded and that was designed 35 years ago. Recently the control line purchases have been increased so that the present day boats are easier to sail. Three rigs (sail sizes) have been developed for the same boat. The original size is called the "standard rig" and is the men’s Olympic single handed boat. The next smaller size is the "radial rig" (the sail is cut in a radial fashion) and is the women’s Olympic single handed boat. The smallest rig is the "4.7" (for the number of square meters) which is designed to pick up the Youth that graduate from Optimist sailing. There are Laser fleets in 122 countries and on 6 continents.

The Lake Eustis Sailing Club’ LASER FLEET is quickly becoming one of the club’s most active ONE DESIGN DINGHY FLEETS. Currently, the fleet counts 25 active Laser sailors, which does not include the many visiting Laser sailors, who are participating in our bi-weekly club racing activities.

A really nice development is that many of our junior Opti graduates have chosen to further improve their sailing skills by following the club’s Laser instructional Laser Sailing program. Our club is very fortunate to have one of the best and most active Laser instructors: Sam Chapin, who is instrumental in “leading” all Laser sail activities. Lake Eustis is a huge lake and is just perfect for open dinghy racing and for One Design Regatta racing. The club is hosting 86 club races and about 9 major One Design Regattas throughout the sailing season with participating sailors coming from all over the U.S.


Laser sailing activities on Lake Eustis are:

-Club racing on 1st and 3rd weekends, -SAIL TRAINING ON WEDNESDAY afternoons in wintertime, from 3 pm-5.30pm; in summertime from 5 pm – as long as conditions allow, with also instructional “chalk talk” about boathandling, tactics and racing rules. -Sail training throughout the weekend: Sail/race training and instructional coaching for juniors and adults.
